The secret to getting your Resume noticed is about to be revealed....read on!

Shhhh! What I’m about to tell you is a secret – on how to get your Resume noticed. Well, a secret only in that if you actually used it, you’d have more success in getting past the initial screening of the Resume and into the “call for an interview” pile. And actually, it’s two parts to the secret. First, pay attention to detail. Yep, boring as this may sound – proof your work. Mistakes count against you, and close only counts in horseshoes. The second part is…wait for it….ACTION VERBS!

Yes, I know, you are shocked. Every Resume Writing book tells you this (or it should), and yet, do you actually USE IT? Get your Resume out now and take the ACTION TEST.

First of all, what’s your Objective? (yeah, yeah, I know and so does the potential employer – to get a job!) But that’s your first mistake – if all you do is repeat the line from the ad, your Resume will be looked upon as just a run-of-the-mill entrant. Figure out what you want to do, but now couch that in terms for the employer – and use as much action as possible. For example, a bookkeeper looking for a job might say in his/her Objective: "To find a pleasant work environment to expand my current knowledge and experience while ensuring the company’s business is financially sound." Sounds a lot better than saying “I want a job in bookkeeping with a financially sound company”. And now you are taking responsibility to HELP the company achieve those goals, not just being a passive worker.

So, how does your Objective measure? Can you see how to modify it? Just decide what you want (being specific helps) and then turn that into a way to help the potential employer.

Now, how’s your Experience section? Just a list of dates and places with basic responsibilities? Start editing those responsibilities with action terms! The Office Administrator doesn’t just type up letters, he/she creates and maintains all correspondence to and for clients, as well as the team he/she works for. Drove a delivery truck? Well, you were able to accurately maneuver downtown traffic to ensure reliable and timely delivery of goods.

By using action terms you are not just highlighting what you did, you are letting the potential employer know you are proud of your work and accomplishments, and you really do know your own worth.

So, put the lights to your Resume and add the action NOW.
