Resumé tips and basic guidelines for job searchers on how to prepare for a professional resumé writing.

Registering with a professional resumé writing service is not an uncommon thing to do. Executives and all types of managerial levels do it to ensure a professionally well-presented resumé.

It is an advantage for a job seeker to know basic guidelines how to prepare a good resumé. The added expense of paying a resumé consultant is also avoided. It is not always easy to prepare for a winning resumé. Here are basic tips to consider.

Job Seeker Should be Positive

When writing a resumé, the job seeker uses action words and phrases. Employers are attracted towards a resume with positive characteristics. Achievements should be included for each of the previous positions, if applicable. Writing them down assists a job seeker in being able to discuss them later, and will be most helpful at interviews.

Check Resumé Content Accuracy

A job seeker ensures that accuracy of his or her resumé is thoroughly checked. Spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and incorrect dates should be carefully avoided. They don't create a good impression.

Covering Letter

The typed covering letter should be included in order for the reader of the resumé or the potential employer to be clear as to the position for which the job seeker is applying for. It is suggested that a short paragraph explaining why the job seeker has the necessary attributes for the position is most helpful.

Resumé Style

The conventional resume, that is, not submitted online, should be typed on A4 paper with enough of white space to make it easy to read. Bullet points along with words should be used to suggest the job seeker is a proactive person with the "achievements" conspicuously detailed with important keywords.

Resumé Content

The resumé should be brief, 3 pages on the average. This could extend for experienced executives to perhaps 5 pages. These higher level management jobs can also include an objective or summary statement in a short paragraph before the personal details.

  • Personal Details – This include date of birth , marital status, nationality, residence, education and/or training courses. In certain culture, year of birth and marital status are generally excluded for reason of discrimination.
  • Technical Summary – This pertains to technical skills, for example computer hardware and software skills, writing skills, knowledge of tools and other methodologies. Knowledge of language can be included, as a proficiency skill. For emphasis, the skills can be written in bold.
  • Career History – In applicable, this includes employer description, position title, and responsibilities. Achievements should be included if applicable.

Use of Email for Resumé

If possible and allowed, use email. More potential employers or hirers are requesting prospective employees resumés through email. In fact, providing details via email makes it a quicker alternative than through a normal mailing post, in particular, for a job that requires immediate attention.

It takes quality time and effort to build a good resumé. However, it is well worth it, if only to prepare for a winning one.
