Using a professional resume template or examining a free CV sample can help applicants put together an updated, trendy curriculum vitae.

A good resume or more comprehensive curriculum vitae (CV) can give a job applicant the edge when it comes to giving an exceptional first impression.

A nondescript resume can make make the applicant seem average. When there is plenty of competition in the job market, it is imperative to create a resume that will really stand out.

Templates for Resumes

An excellent free downloadable resume template can be found at Microsoft Office.

Some tips and tricks suggested by the professionals when customizing a resume are to:

  1. Make sure that the resume written conjures up the right image of the applicant as well as highlighting skills, capabilities and achievements. If an does not match the picture painted with your resume at the interview, then the application will not be taken further.
  2. Be careful when using abbreviations - they can be misunderstood.
  3. Leave out any sort of failure - exams, marriages, businesses, etc.
  4. Reasons for leaving each job.
  5. Fancy patterns/borders/backgrounds - these detract from your presentation.
  6. Title pages, binders and folders are usually unnecessary and can be off-putting.
  7. Leave out age, date of birth, weight, height, health, or any other personal information that is irrelevant to the application.
  8. Do not use poor quality photocopies of your resume.

Free CV Sample

A CV could be compiled from a template or written from scratch. Looking at a free cv sample will give the applicant ideas but of course the cv needs to be customised. Although there are no hard and fast rules, a good cv could include the following:

Name of applicant and opening statement: Start with a bold, centered heading stating the name of applicant, followed by a brief statement.

An example of an opening statement could be - "IT Manager, Offering 6 Years experience, computer science degree, with special knowledge of networking, firewalls, operating systems, applications and network security".

Follow the opening statement with a brief sentence to describe what the applicant intends to accomplish for the company, for example: "My aim is to continue to manage staff effectively and improving on existing infrastructure, project management, ensuring service delivery to end users".

Target Positions: State clearly what position is being applied for.

Personal Information: Date and place of birth, citizenship, gender and contact details, marital status, number of children.

Education: Include high school, university attended and dates, details of degrees, diplomas and other training and certification, accreditations and computer skills.

Employment History: This should be listed with the last position held listed first. Be sure to include details such as position held, name of company, dates and a fairly comprehensive work history.

Awards: Details of special awards or recognition in field of expertise.

Personal Interests: Include sports, hobbies, memberships etc. but keep it brief.

A well crafted, professional resume or cv can continue to work in favor of the applicant even after an interview, since the resume can help to focus the interviewer's mind on good points and hone in on achievements.

Once the applicant has left the interview, the cv or resume will continue to work in the candidate's favor as the interviewer will probably reread it before making a decision,
